Teeth whitening by the method Opalescence

21-01-25

Opalescence method is a professional teeth-whitening system developed by the American company Ultradent. It includes several products for both professional and at-home use, designed to lighten teeth by several shades using the active ingredients carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.

Types of Opalescence Whitening

1. Opalescence Boost (in-clinic whitening)

  • Performed in a clinical setting
  • Contains 40% hydrogen peroxide
  • The procedure takes about 1–2 hours
  • Does not require a light, as the gel is chemically activated
  • Ideal for quick results (e.g., before an important event)

2. Opalescence PF (at-home whitening with custom trays)

  • The concentration of the active ingredient varies (10%, 15%, 20% or 35% carbamide peroxide)
  • The gel is applied to custom-made trays created from the shapes of your teeth

3. Opalescence Go (pre-filled trays)

  • A convenient option without the need for custom trays
  • Comes with gel already inside (6% or 15% hydrogen peroxide)
  • Trays are worn for 15–60 minutes daily for 5–10 days

4. Opalescence Whitening Toothpaste

  • Toothpaste designed to maintain whitening results

  Advantages of Opalescence

  • Safe for teeth and enamel due to the inclusion of strengthening ingredients (e.g., potassium nitrate and fluoride)
  • Can lighten teeth by 2–8 shades depending on the condition of the enamel
  • Available for both professional and at-home use
  • Offers a variety of product types and concentrations to suit individual needs

Before beginning any whitening procedure, it is recommended to consult a dentist to assess the condition of your teeth and gums, choose the appropriate method and minimize the risk of side effects.

How often is teeth whitening allowed by the method Opalescence?

The frequency of teeth whitening with Opalescence depends on the type of procedure and the individual characteristics of your teeth. Here are the main recommendations:

1. In-clinic whitening (Opalescence Boost)

  • Should be done no more than once every 6–12 months.
  • It is important to allow the enamel to recover, especially if sensitivity occurs.

2. At-home whitening (Opalescence PF or Go)

  • A typical at-home whitening course lasts 1–2 weeks
  • The repeat course can be done after 6–12 months, depending on how well the results are maintained and the condition of your teeth

3. Maintenance whitening

  • Use Opalescence Whitening Toothpaste to help maintain results
  • If needed, pre-filled Opalescence Go trays (6%) can be used every few months to refresh the color

  Important Recommendations:

1. If your teeth become sensitive, increase the intervals between whitening sessions or use a lower concentration gel
2. Follow your dentist’s recommendations, as they may adjust the frequency based on the condition of your enamel
3. Avoid excessive whitening, as it may weaken the enamel and cause tooth sensitivity

How long can teeth stay white after whitening procedure?

The duration of teeth whitening results depends on several factors, including the whitening method, individual enamel characteristics and lifestyle. On average:

  • In-clinic whitening - results last from 6 months to 2 years if care recommendations are followed
  • At-home whitening - results last 6–12 months but may last longer with proper care

The minuses of teeth whitening procedure

  Disadvantages and limitations

  • Temporary tooth and gum sensitivity may occur after whitening
  • Does not whiten fillings, crowns or veneers
  • Not suitable for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Results may vary depending on the initial tooth color and lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking or coffee consumption)
